Cooperation Agreement on Tire Upcycling Research was Signed between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Liverpool
Date: 2025-06-20

On May 28, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the University of Liverpool (UoL) held a signing ceremony for a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the International Joint Research for Tire Upcycling at the Minhang campus, jointly promoting the innovative development of green recycling technologies for end-of-life tires (ELTs). This collaboration marks a significant practice between China and the UK in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development. Prof. Shifeng Wang from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at SJTU and Dr. Haopeng Wang from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UoL signed the MOU on behalf of their respective institutions. The ceremony was witnessed by a delegation from Liverpool, led by Councillor Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy of Liverpool City Council, along with representatives from UoL, the Foreign Affairs Office of Huangpu District in Shanghai, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange at SJTU, and the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at SJTU.

Prof. Haitao Yin, Director of the Division of Global Cooperation and Exchange at SJTU, extended a warm welcome to Councillor Nick Small and his delegation. He expressed gratitude to the Liverpool City Council for their support in fostering collaboration between the two universities and looked forward to more scientific research partnerships and cultural exchanges in the future. He noted that China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and the UK's net zero target reflect the two major nations' responsibility in tackling climate change. He expressed confidence that the collaboration between the two teams would contribute to carbon emission reduction in both countries.

Ms. Kate Stansfield, Head of Sustainability at Liverpool City Council, highlighted that this year marks the 26th anniversary of Liverpool and Shanghai becoming sister cities, underscoring the long-standing and profound friendship and cooperation between the two cities. The collaboration between UoL and SJTU is yet another reflection of the strong ties between the two cities. She expressed hope that this partnership would deliver practical solutions to address global climate challenges.

Prof. Shifeng Wang provided an overview of the joint research initiative. Over 1 billion end-of-life tires are generated annually worldwide, and improper disposal can lead to severe environmental pollution and significant resource waste. Prof. Wang’s research team has developed a thermos-oxidative method for tire rubber and preliminarily elucidated the targeted decrosslinking mechanism, enabling the high-value application of recycled tire rubber in road paving materials. With the support of the SJTUUoL Seed Fund, major breakthroughs is expected to be achieved in technological innovation, international collaboration, and industrial applications by combining the strengths of both institutions.

Following the ceremony, the attendees visited the Low-Carbon Eco Road located on Cangyuan Road. This road utilizes deeply decrosslinked tire rubber, overcoming challenges such as instability, strong odors, and poor cost-effectiveness associated with traditional technologies, achieving a low-carbon, high-performance pavement solution. The technology has been widely applied in provinces such as Hebei, Henan, Gansu, and Shanxi, demonstrating excellent resistance to moisture damage, low-temperature self-healing capabilities, and superior aging resistance.
