The Journal of Physical Chemistry (JPC) series and the Physical Chemistry Division (PHYS) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) have announced that Prof. Bei DING from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has been selected as the winner of the 2025 The Journal of Physical Chemistry B Award: Biophysics, Biomaterials, Liquids, and Soft Matter.

This award recognizes researchers who have made significant contributions to the field of physical chemistry in areas covered by JPC A, JPC B, and JPC C. Prof. Bei DING is the first scholar from China to receive this honor.

Prof. Bei DING is a faculty member and doctoral advisor at SCCE, and leads a research group at the university’s Center for Ultrafast Science. She received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Peking University in 2009, followed by a master's degree in optics and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Michigan. Her group investigates fundamental physical chemistry questions in biological systems, with the goal of elucidating functional mechanisms using ultrafast spectroscopic techniques such as transient UV/visible absorption, transient infrared absorption, and two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy. In recent years, her group has focused on the photochemistry and isomerization dynamics of the BLUF domain in blue-light photoreceptor proteins, gradually uncovering the underlying principles of three key mechanisms: proton-coupled electron transfer, proton rocking, and proton migration. Currently, the group is employing site-specific infrared probes and 2D IR spectroscopy to study the structural dynamics of the BLUF domain. In addition, they are expanding into new directions through collaborations to design artificial photoenzymes for asymmetric organic reactions.
